Weekend Roundup: We Drive the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador, Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 Announced
Been away from your computer this week and missed all the automotive news? We've gathered a few of the top stories of the past week along with the weekend racing schedule for your convenience.
Lamborghini has been teasing us with the successor to its Murcielago for some time, but this week we were finally able score some seat time in the new Italian supercar. Maserati also gave us a chance to test out its new GranTurismo MC, and we also managed to spend some quality time with BMW's smallest crossover, the X1.
Albeit minor, Chevrolet announced changes for its 2012 Corvette. The performance coupe's exterior remains unchanged, but its interior receives a few updates for the 2012 model year, with revamped steering wheels, better seat bolstering, and contrasting stitching. New high-performance tires and wheels are available when choosing optional packages. Pricing has yet to be announced, but we suspect it may be close to the 2011 model.
There have been no shortage of special-edition Porsche 911 models recently, but we believe the last is upon us. Besting the already-potent GT3 RS, a 500-hp, 339 lb-ft naturally aspirated 4.0-liter engine resides within - Porsche's most powerful non-boosted engine ever. Although carrying a price of $185, 950, we don't expect Porsche will have any trouble moving the potent 911.
Violent Storms Trouble Southern United States Auto Manufacturing
This week's violent storms caused severe damage in southern states, while claiming hundreds of lives. Automakers operating in the region also experienced devastation, as the storms have caused three plants to temporarily halt production. Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and Kia have all suspended production until conditions improve.
As it stands, Chrysler owes the United States and Canadian governments some $7.5 billion, but plans to repay that full amount by the end of June. While a portion of the amount will be repaid in cash by Fiat, the remainder will come from the selling of private securities to investment firms.
