Few manufacturers put as much focus on the ‘Ring as BMW does, and this obsession showed when it recently put its new M4 GTS through the Green Hell gauntlet. Best of all, BMW released an on-board video of the lap for us to enjoy.
To create a machine capable of tearing around the ‘Ring in just 7:28, BMW turned up the performance wick on the M4. Although the GTS is still powered by the M4’s twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, the GTS packs nearly 70 more horses than the regular M4, with power peaking at 493 hp and torque at 442 lb-ft, made possible through the use of a water injection system that we saw on the BMW M4 Moto GP safety car earlier this year.
Weight on the GTS has dropped as well, with a total reduction sitting around 256 pounds. This is achieved through the extensive use of carbon fiber and carbon-reinforced plastics, removed rear seats, and stripped-out interior door panels.
Underneath the lightweight skin is a stiffer suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes, along with a large rear wing and additional aerodynamic effects on the exterior.
With all of these go-fast bits in symphony, the M4 GTS savages the ‘Ring, coming in at a lap time of 7:28. This puts the GTS right between the times set by the Porsche Carrera GT and the Ferrari 458 Italia — impressive company indeed.
