Watch the 2016 BMW M2 Tearing up the Nurburgring

BMW M’s latest creation tackles the Green Hell.

The 2016 BMW M2 isn't expected to start production until November, so BMW is hard at work fine-tuning the high-powered coupe for track dominance. This new clip of the M2 carving up the Nürburgring has us itching to sample its upgraded power, track-ready chassis, and delightful handling we know and love from the M235i.

We've already spied the 2016 BMW M2 nearly nude earlier this year, and this pre-production prototype tells the same story of what to expect from the latest M car. An uprated version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six in the M235i will churn out an estimated 369 hp, up from 320 hp. Expect an more serious suspension than we've seen on a 2-Series, as well as burlier brakes with painted calipers, larger wheels, and an aggressive aero package with bigger air intakes.

To the delight of sports-car purists, the 2016 BMW M2 will likely be rear-wheel drive only, although it will offer a choice of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Those of us somewhat peeved by how big and bloated the BMW M3/M4 has become are salivating at the notion of an M car that'll bring to mind the rowdy, 355-hp BMW 1 Series M Coupe. Then again, the M235i already achieves such a fantastic performance balance that it's hard to imagine BMW being able to replicate that with so much extra muscle. With any luck, they'll find the happy medium.

Until then, feast your eyes and ears on the 2016 BMW M2 earning its stripes around the Green Hell, and hear the dulcet tones of howling tires and six inline cylinders.
