Volkswagen Teases U.S. with Golf R Wagon

More spacious R not headed Stateside.

Volkswagen’s stand at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show has one car certain to make enthusiasts drools: a wagon version of the new Golf R hot hatch. But just because the Volkswagen Golf R wagon is on display here, there’s no guarantee the car will ever be sold in the U.S. market.

“We show the car, we look at the response, we first introduce the Golf R [hatchback], and then we have the option to play with it later,” says Volkswagen of America president Michael Horn. “There’s the option. This R SportWagen will help us with the image and getting a little bit of spice in the Golf family when we need it.”

In other words: The Volkswagen Golf R wagon isn’t coming to the States just yet, but it possibly could in the future.

Volkswagen says its first ever Golf R wagon offers, “zoom with room,” as it combines the spaciousness of the new Golf Sportwagen with the performance of the Golf R. That means more cargo room behind the back seats, yet the same 2.0-liter turbo-four engine rated for 290 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel-drive and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic are standard, helping the Volkswagen Golf R wagon rush to 62 mph in 5.1 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph.

The Volkswagen Golf R wagon receives the same visual upgrades as the regular hatchback, including a unique front bumper with enlarged front air intakes, special 18- or 19-inch wheels hiding black-painted brake calipers, matte-chrome mirrors, quad exhausts, a black rear diffuser, and vertical aerodynamic flaps at either side of the rear window. Interior enhancements consist of sports seats finished in Alcantara and leather, blue ambient lighting, automatic climate control, Nappa leather trim pieces, and a 320 km/h (199 mph) speedometer illuminated in light blue.

If the Volkswagen Golf R wagon were to launch in the U.S., it wouldn’t have many natural competitors. There isn’t a wagon or hatchback version of the Subaru WRX/WRX STI, and most other high-performance wagons are much larger and more expensive (namely the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG). The car would likely be very expensive, however, given that a standard 2015 Volkswagen Golf R already commands $37,415 with destination. Yet for loyal Volkswagen fans, or buyers who won’t sacrifice sportiness when buying a practical vehicle, the Volkswagen Golf R wagon could be the perfect new car.
