CHICAGO—Toyota added another special edition trim to its truck and SUV lines when it introduced the 2021 4Runner, Tacoma, and Trail editions at the 2020 Chicago Auto Show. As its name implies, the Trail trim emphasizes the vehicles' outdoor-oriented mission. Using the mid-grade SR5 trim as a base, the Trail includes items such as black exterior badges, all-weather floor mats, and black seats with tan stitching.

Of course, each Trail also includes model-specific kit, as well. The 2021 4Runner Trail sports dark gray wheels from the 4Runner TRD Off-Road, a Yakima rooftop cargo basket, and a custom-made 40-quart cooler for keeping food and snacks cool while out on the . . . trail.

Helping the Tacoma Trail standout from the pack is a grille cribbed from the high-end Tacoma Limited and a set of dark gray wheels from the Tacoma TRD Off-Road. Meanwhile, additional versatility comes courtesy of its bed-mounted 115-volt power outlet and lockable storage containers on the left and right sides of the bed (the left side space also doubles as a cooler).

Like the Tacoma Trail, the Tundra Trail incorporates lockable, bed-side storage containers (including an insulated left side container, which doubles as a cooler). The truck also wears trim-specific wheels and adopts the grille of the flagship Tundra 1794 Edition.

Regardless of model, all three Trail editions are available with either two- or four-wheel drive and in one of four colors: Army Green, Cement, Midnight Black, and Super White. Production of each is limited, as well, with Toyota planning to produce approximately 4,000 4Runner Trails, 7,000 Tacoma Trails, and 5,000 Tundra Trails, the latter two of which are relegated exclusively to each models' biggest cab option.

Pricing remains under wraps, as do the models' on-sale date. Nevertheless, expect each to wear a price tag a couple grand higher than those of their SR5 counterparts.
