While the TRD badge is probably most well-known for being applied to the brand’s most off-road-ready trucks and SUVs—and has recently spread to the Camry, Avalon, and more recently, the RAV4—it’s no surprise that the performance arm has cooked up some goodies for the all-new Supra, a model arguably that makes the most sense to receive some Toyota Racing Development.
Toyota debuted the GR Supra Performance Line Concept TRD last week at Osaka Auto Messe, a Japanese event that focuses on customized cars. The silver exterior features a number of pieces rendered in carbon fiber, including a front lip spoiler, trunklid spoiler, side skirts, rear spats, and a boomerang-shaped piece of trim on the doors. Toyota says the lightweight bits help improve aerodynamics, and the car also has some hot-looking 19-inch forged aluminum wheels painted in black.
Here in the U.S., the 2020 Toyota Supra comes standard with a 3.0-liter inline-six delivering 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. That engine comes mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both the engine and transmission are supplied by BMW, but the tuning of those units is said to be unique in the Supra. The sports car arrives at dealerships in the U.S. starting this summer.
It seems as if Toyota is spreading the TRD love throughout the lineup, so it’s likely we’ll see TRD bits for the U.S.-spec Supra. Eventually, some type of hotter Supra is likely to come out as well. We could see a Supra wearing the GRMN badge, as Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada hinted at in a report last year, though we’ve also heard GR-derived cars sold in the U.S. would be badged as TRD models.
