Tanner Foust Racing Debuts 900-HP Volkswagen Passat Drift Car

Not your average Passat.

Professional drifter and rally driver Tanner Foust revealed a new specially-prepared Volkswagen Passat he will pilot in his return to Formula Drift this season. While the car looks somewhat similar to a standard Passat, the drift machine is radically different than the front-wheel-drive midsize sedan you see on public roads.

In order to have the power to break the rear tires loose at a moment’s notice, the Rockstar Energy Drink/Nitto Tire Volkswagen Passat features a 7.4-liter V-8 spitting out 700 hp, with a 200-hp nitrous-oxide boost to push the total power output to 900 hp. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed racing transmission.

The introduction of the Rockstar Volkswagen Passat marks Tanner Foust’s return to the drift circuit. A two-time Formula Drift world champion, Foust turned his focus to RallyCross in 2010 and has since claimed the Global RallyCross championship title three times, in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Foust has previously raced a modified Ford Fiesta, only recently signing a contract with Volkswagen for the 2014 model year. Foust holds more motorsports medals and victories from the X Games than any other competitor, and has competed in a multitude of other forms of motorsport. Currently, Foust is also a presenter on the U.S. version of Top Gear.

The drift-ready Volkswagen Passat makes its competitive debut at the Formula Drift event at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, starting on June 4 through June 7. Take a look at the insane 900-hp drift machine in the photo gallery and video below.
