Report: Audi RS5 to use 4.2-liter V-8, 7-speed DSG

Several rumors about the long-awaited RS5 version of Audi's sexy A5 coupe can now be put to rest: The coupe is reported to have a modified version of Audi's well-known 4.2-liter V-8.

It might seem odd, but the news of this more potent version of Audi's stunning coupe is actually somewhat disappointing. Sure, it's good to hear the car is actually going to go into production. It's disappointing to find out that the car will only have a 450-hp 4.2-liter V-8 as French car magazine L'Automobile Magazine (no relation) is reporting.

Although the V-8 puts out as much power as the 5.2-liter V-10 found in the S8 and more power than the same V-10 has in the S6, many were hoping to find the 525-hp 5.2-liter V-10 from the R8 5.2 FSI. Even better would have been the twin-turbocharged V-10 from the Audi RS6 that puts out a ludicrous 580-hp, although that car likely would not have come Stateside.

Putting the power to the ground will be, of course, Audi's signature Quattro all-wheel-drive system with either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional DSG transmission. L'Automobile Magazine is reporting it will be the seven-speed DSG, however that transmission has not yet made its way into any car found in the U.S.

It is not known when the RS5 will go on sale (in Europe or in the U.S.) or if it will even make its way over here. Given that this is Audi's direct M3 competitor, it is likely that we will see this car sometime in the future.
