Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport is a Track-Only Homologation Special

The Cayman GT4, unhinged.

The 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 is a track-ready tool straight from the showroom floor, but that didn’t stop Porsche from taking the GT4 a step further and turning it into the track-only GT4-based race car that will be ready to compete on the world stage.

The Porsche Cayman GT4 quickly made a name for itself after its debut earlier this year for its classic approach to performance, with a manual transmission as its only available gearbox. The new track-only Cayman Clubsport breaks this manual-only rule, and sends its power to the rear wheels through a dual-clutch transmission linked to a mechanical locking rear differential.

Power still comes from a mid-mounted 3.8-liter flat-six engine pulled from the Porsche 991.1 Carrera S, but plenty of changes have been made to the Cayman’s chassis to differentiate it from the roadgoing coupe. Up front, the GT4 Clubsport pilfers the front strut axle system from the bigger and more capable GT3 Cup car, along with heavy-duty 15-inch diameter race brakes at all four corners. The race car weighs just 2,866 lb, versus the 2,955-lb curb weight of the road-legal GT4.

Inside, the Cayman GT4 Clubsport comes with a welded-in safety cage, racing bucket seats, and a six-point racing harness, similar to the Clubsport package already offered for the street-going GT4.

Porsche plans to homologate the car for a slew of race series, including the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, the Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy, the Ultra 94 GT3 Cup Challenge Canada, and the Pirelli World Challenge, among others.

Unfortunately, the GT4 Clubsport is a beast left tethered to the track only, as it will not be road legal in the U.S. or Europe. Because of this, orders for the Clubsport must be placed with Porsche Motorsport in Weissach, Germany, or Porsche Motorsport North America.

Look for more details on the new Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport as it makes its official debut later this year at the Los Angeles auto show.
