Opel Astra GTC Production Model Bound for Europe

The Opel GTC concept that made its debut in Paris last year is destined for production, and GM produced this short animation to preview the upcoming hot hatch. While what we see is only a computer rendering of the GTC, GM insists that it's very close to what the car will actually look like. That's good news, since it looks a lot like the concept, retaining its three-door hatchback body, larger wheels and generally sexy-looking exterior.

Sold here briefly under the Saturn banner, the Astra is an important car for GM in Europe. Sporting either an Opel or Vauxhall badge depending on the country you're in, the Astra comes in several body styles and multiple powertrain options are available.

The GTC will be the top performance trim level of the Astra, with sportier proportions and more power. In concept form, the GTC put out an estimated 290 horsepower from its turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter I-4. The concept also featured a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. While we don't expect it to get that much oomph, it will likely be quick and plenty powerful.

We'll know how powerful soon enough, as GM is expected release full details on the new Astra GTC in six weeks when European customers will officially be able to preorder their very own Astra hot hatch. The production version will make its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. If the car's specs and looks don't stray too far from the concept, the GTC will no doubt be one sweet ride. Suddenly, we really miss Saturn.
