Next-Generation Nissan Pickup Teased

Nissan posted a picture on Instagram today that shows a veiled version of a new pickup truck model. Because this photo comes from Nissan's global page, this pickup is likely the redesigned version of the global Nissan Navara, which is known here as the Nissan Frontier.

Although previous versions of the Frontier and Navara have been virtually identical, a Nissan U.S. spokesperson told us that this teaser "is not an indication" of the next Nissan Frontier pickup for the U.S. market. This could mean that the next-generation U.S.-spec Nissan Frontier for the U.S. will differentiate itself further from the Navara. This would make sense, as this hints that Nissan is further optimizing the next-generation Frontier to better compete in the U.S. midsize pickup segment which will gain two new competitors this year in the form of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.

The current generation of the Nissan Frontier has been around since way back in 2005. It's overdue for a replacement, and we should see the new model sometime in 2015 after Nissan debuts the redesigned Nissan Titan pickup. This full-size truck is rumored to debut at the 2015 Detroit auto show, and be offered with a 5.0-liter diesel V-8 from Cummins. The next Frontier is also a likely candidate for a Cummins diesel engine, as Nissan showed the Frontier Diesel Runner concept (pictured) at this year's Chicago auto show to gauge consumer reaction to a Frontier powered by a 2.8-liter four-cylinder Cummins diesel. The Colorado and Canyon will also offer a diesel four-cylinder engine starting next year.

Although this teaser may not give us a glimpse at the next Nissan Frontier, stay tuned for more news about Nissan's future truck lineup in the coming months.
