New York 2012: Subaru Refreshes 2013 Legacy Sedan, Outback Wagon
After recording nearly 267,000 sales in the U.S. last year, Subaru has an even bigger goal for 2012: to hit 320,000 sales. If Subaru reaches that target, it would be the company's fifth straight year of sales growth in this market. To help fuel increased sales volumes, Subaru is updating two of its cars, the 2013 Legacy and 2013 Outback.
Both the 2013 Legacy and 2013 Outback benefit from a new FB-series 2.5-liter boxer-four engine, which has dual overhead cams and produces 173 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque, increases of 3 hp and 4 lb-ft compared to the outgoing single overhead cam engine. The new engine has more low-end torque for everyday driving.
The cars also score an updated continuously variable transmission, which is supposed to be quieter and more response than before. It contributes to improved fuel economy of 24/32 mpg (city/highway) for the 2013 Legacy, up from 23/31 mpg in the 2012 model. The 2013 Outback is predicted to return 24/30 mpg with the powertrain combo, an increase over the 22/29 mpg ratings of the 2012 model.
Other changes include a mild face lift, better seat fabrics, new wood trim, and chassis updates to reduce body roll by 40 percent. The 2013 Legacy and 2013 Outback are available with Subaru's new EyeSight safety system. It uses two cameras to provide adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and collision warning functionality. EyeSight makes its U.S.-market debut on the Outback and Legacy, but will eventually appear on other Subaru models.
"What's clever about [EyeSight] is its simplicity," said Subaru executive vice president Thomas Doll, noting that it will be significantly cheaper than collision-avoidance gadgets from rival manufacturers.
Sadly, Subaru has discontinued what was sometimes called the grown man's WRX: the Legacy 2.5GT. The sporty variant, which could hit 60 mph in less than six seconds, used a turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer-four engine with 265 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, along with a six-speed manual transmission and unique 18-inch wheels.
