New Fiat 500 Set to Debut on July 4
Could see improvements in fuel efficiency and interior quality.
Fiat announced the new 500 will make its official debut on July 4. This is a significant date for Fiat, as July 4 marks the original debut dates of both the original Fiat 500, and the modern-day 500. The quirky compact has been on the global market since 2007, and has been sold in the U.S. since 2010.
The new Fiat 500 has remained a stylish and cool little hatch, but it has grown long in the tooth, pushing forward through the years with few major updates. The last tweak the 500 saw was a minor under-the-skin refresh in 2014, with very minor engine and interior improvements. Sales of the 500 have suffered as a result of the model stagnation, with U.S. sales tumbling in the past few years, in part because low gas prices have reduced the incentive for customers to buy small city cars.
The new design should bring the Fiat 500 closer in line with the larger 500X compact crossover and 500L hatchback. The interior will receive the biggest redesign, with special focus given to designing the dash around the new five-inch touchscreen infotainment system. In addition to a new design, the interior should see a boost in quality as well, with better materials shared with the larger and more expensive 500X.
Changes to the powertrain are still unknown at this point, but we expect there to be significant revisions in a bid to increase fuel efficiency.
The new Fiat 500 makes its official debut on July 4 and could be shown publicly at the Frankfurt auto show in September.
