Mercedes-AMG GT S Formula 1 Safety Car Revealed

Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate serves as official medical car.

Mercedes announced the renewal of their partnership with the FIA with the debut of an all-new Formula 1 safety car and medical car. With the previous Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Safety Car on its way out, Mercedes outfitted the SLS AMG’s model replacement, the Mercedes-AMG GT S, with the proper equipment to continue the job.

The Mercedes-AMG GT S is the newest sports car to emerge from the mad men in Affalterbach. With a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 pushing out 503 hp, the GT S has the gumption to lead the pack of Formula 1 cars safely. Not much was done in the way of upgrades, save a roof-mounted air-scoop that directs the flow of air over the light bar on the roof to the rear spoiler.

On the inside, the GT S Safety Car is outfitted with a radio for constant contact with the race organizers and safety chiefs, along with a series of LED warning lights to alert the driver for deployment and medical emergencies on the track.

In the case of medical emergencies, the new Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate is on-hand and prepared for crashes and injuries. With the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 found in the GT S, the medical team has the ability for quick on-site response. The C63 Estate is fitted with the proper medical equipment for on-site care, with a defibrillator and respirator, along with LED warning lights, including a warning light for when the G-force threshold has been breached while carrying an injured individual.
