If the regular 720S isn’t extreme enough for you, McLaren has cooked up what promises to be an even more dynamically capable variant. The supercar is now available to order with a Track Pack, reducing its weight by 53 pounds.
The model starts life as a regular 720S in Performance specification, which means it has hood air intakes, rear fender air intakes, carbon-fiber mirror caps, and other upgrades. On top of these features, it receives special lightweight 10-spoke forged alloy wheels, an MSO Defined Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fiber Active Rear Spoiler, and a sport exhaust.
Inside the cabin, look for carbon-fiber racing seats available in two different sizes. The extended gearshift paddles get a carbon-fiber visual treatment, and the interior also receives a black Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel. There are six-point harnesses for both the driver and passenger, with a titanium harness bar mounted behind the seats.
Track Pack models also get the McLaren Track Telemetry system. To help a driver improve his or her track performance, this feature shows key data such as lap times, sector splits, and driver comparisons, and it can even play back video footage to help drivers identify what they can improve on. This is made possible by three video cameras built into the car.
The McLaren 720S packs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 good for 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Also under the sheetmetal is a one-piece carbon-fiber tub with an integrated roof, contributing to a low dry weight of 2,828 pounds. In our First Test, we clocked the 720S hitting 60 mph from a standstill in 2.5 seconds.
We’ve contacted McLaren to confirm whether or not the 720S Track Pack is coming to the U.S. In the U.K., the Track Pack adds £28,360 to the price of the 720S. In total, the model will start at £224,700, which roughly translates to $294,000 at current exchange rates. Deliveries begin early next year.
An even more robust 720S is on the way, but it’s only for the track. McLaren is currently developing the new 720S GT3 race car. This new model has been testing across six different circuits around Europe so far. It debuts for the 2019 season.
