Just Listed: 1972 Lotus Elan Plus 2 is Lightweight Fun for Four
Lighter than an ‘89 Miata
In a market where two-ton sedans are considered both commonplace and acceptable, the 2,300-pound 2016 ND Miata is a freak of nature. Its diminutive size and rigorous weight management means the ND is light and nimble in ways we haven't seen in years. Back in the 1960s, however, this would have been considered quite the porker when compared to the tinny roadsters from England. Don't believe us? Consider this Lotus Elan Plus 2 on offer from Bring a Trailer
Despite the fixed roof and extra seats, if you roll this little Elan onto a set of four-corner scales, the numbers will stop spinning when they reach 1,960 pounds. If you hold out for the more popular Elan roadster, you'll shave a whopping 400 pounds off the Plus 2.
Underneath the sharp fiberglass bodywork beats a revvy 1.6L (1,557cc) twin-cam four-cylinder, pushing out a respectable 118 hp and 108 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the low weight, just 7.9 seconds are needed to reach 60 mph.
This Elan is presented in good driving condition. A recent $2,000 refresh included new tires, rebuilt carburetors, brake booster removal, refreshed brake lines, electrical system repair, extra coolant recovery system, and new side mirrors.
The Elan is a solid five-footer, with the majority of blemishes and scratches present primarily on the hood. Underneath the chassis, only minor surface rust is present.
