Images and details of the production Ford Everest SUV have been revealed. The midsize three-row crossover is based on the global Ford Ranger pickup, and will be sold in markets outside of North America.
The Ford Everest looks much like it did when we saw it in concept form last year. Up front, the Ford Everest has a bold grille with large chrome surround and horizontal bars similar to that on the redesigned 2015 Ford Edge, with standard LED daytime running lights. While much of the exterior shares styling with other Ford models, the slim headlights and profile from the C-pillar back remind us of the current Dodge Durango. Overall, the Everest has a rugged look.
The Ford Everest is available in rear- or four-wheel-drive versions depending on market. An available intelligent four-wheel-drive system features an active transfer case with a Terrain Management System. The latter features four automatic settings: Normal, Snow/Gravel/Grass, Sand, and Rock. Drivers can also manually lock the transfer case in low-range for extreme off-road environments. The suspension consists of coil springs all around and a Watt’s linkage on the rear live axle.
Three engine choices are available, including one gas and two diesel options, all mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Engine options include a new 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 with a twin-scroll turbocharger, 3.2-liter Duratorq turbodiesel I-5, and 2.2-liter Duratorq turbodiesel I-4.
Inside, the Everest features Ford’s latest in-car Sync connectivity system and an 8.0-inch touchscreen. Available features include Active Noise Cancelation, a panoramic moonroof, powered liftgate, 30 storage bins, multiple power outlets for the first and second rows, and seating for up to seven adults. The second- and third-row seats also fold flat.
Don’t expect the Ford Everest to make it to the U.S., as the automaker already sells the mid-size Explorer and Flex crossovers with three-row seating. Those needing the towing ability of a body-on-frame SUV can always step up to the full-size eight-passenger Expedition. The Ford Everest is aimed at the Asia Pacific and South American markets.
