Ford Cuts Full Size Car Production

Ford is eliminating one of two shifts in the Chicago plant where it builds the Taurus and Taurus X along with the Mercury Sable and Lincoln MKS.

It is Ford’s latest move to cut production in the face of falling sales, and to shift its focus from large cars and trucks to compacts. Earlier this month, Ford announced it was converting its truck factory in Wayne, Mich., to build small cars by 2010.

The company was careful to point out that the recently introduced 2009 Lincoln MKS is selling well and does not share in responsibility for the cuts.

The other three vehicles all saw significant sales declines for both August and the year so far, although some of the Taurus X’s struggles might be explained by the launch of the 2009 Ford Flex.

About 600 part-time workers will be affected by the slow-down.
