Five V-12-Powered Luxury Cars on Sale Today

The 12-cylinder stalwarts that continue to fight the good fight.

As you are well aware, the V-12 engine is an endangered species, and all but a small fraction of cars armed with twelve cylinders are still in production today. What is even more exceptional nowadays is the naturally aspirated V-12, a rare breed that is currently limited to Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Aston Martin; the rest of the V-12 band plays through turbochargers. Despite the ongoing demise of naturally aspirated V-12 engines, recently, a handful of limited-edition specials like the Sián Roadster and boutique cars like the GMA T.50 have sprung up.

Keeping our hopes up among other proponents of the V-12 engine are Rolls-Royce, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Regardless of whether these automakers have gone the turbocharged way, they continue to fight the good fight. How much longer they'll be able to, however, is anyone's guess.

We had best enjoy them before they're gone, then. Here are five select examples of V-12-powered luxury cars that are still on sale today.

1. 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S650

One could easily describe the Maybach S650 as the crème de la crème in Mercedes-Benz passenger transportation; examine the rear passenger seats (or just about anything else in the cabin), and you'll agree. An ultra-luxe interior is not all the Maybach S650 has to show for its $202,550 price tag, though. Under the hood is a 6.0-liter V-12 unleashing 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque that is capable of reaching 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

2. 2020 Rolls-Royce Wraith

Every Rolls-Royce costs well over six figures, but perhaps because of its body shape, the Wraith comes across as the most normal-seeming (at least until a second glance) Rolls on the road. Powered by a twin-turbo V-12 packing 624 hp, the Rolls-Royce Wraith has a top speed of 155 mph. What's more, this luxury coupe can comfortably fit two adults in the rear passenger seating area, something that most two-door four-passenger cars cannot accomplish. Prefer a convertible? The Wraith's drop-top counterpart, the Dawn, is your V-12 answer.

3. 2020 Ferrari GTC4 Lusso

The all-wheel-drive Ferrari GTC4 Lusso is one of the last naturally aspirated V-12s currently offered on the market, and though it is a 2+2 coupe on paper, it looks more or less like a hatchback. Making 680 hp and 514 pound-feet of torque, the GTC4 Lusso has a claimed zero-to-60-mph of just over three seconds and a top speed of 208 mph. While the rear seats may seem small to sedan shoppers, this 2+2 has some of the best rear seats we've ever seen in a performance coupe.

4. 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera and Volante

You may need to blink twice to realize that this rear-wheel-drive convertible has rear seats—though they are perhaps suitable for a couple of not-particularly-large Pomeranians. The 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante, as noted by our very own Conner Golden, is an absolute beauty. Likewise, it's gorgeous in coupe form. Equipped with a twin-turbo V-12 possessing an outstanding 715 hp, the DBS Superleggera and Superleggera Volante can smoke almost any car in their paths with a top speed of 211 mph. Puppies do count as passengers, don't they?

5. 2020 BMW M760i xDrive

Whether it is here to stay or the next in line to go once the next-generation 7 Series arrives, let us take a moment to appreciate one the few and far between V-12 sedans. The BMW M760i xDrive is massive, luxurious, and quite a powerful sedan. Open the hood, and you will meet a 6.6-liter twin-turbo V-12 safekeeping 601 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, plenty to make a run to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. Those looking for more than just acceleration or power will appreciate the V-12 Bimmer; executive editor Nelson Ireson named the M760i xDrive the best driver's V-12 sedan on the market after his 2017 test drive.
