First Look: 2018 Audi A5/S5 Coupe
A5 gets a manual
Good news for stick fans: the 2018 Audi A5 will be available with a six-speed manual.
For 2018, the Audi A5 and S5 coupe get slightly wider, flatter grilles and two new engines to choose from — a 2.0-liter I-4 or a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. Transmission choices for the A5 are a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual.
The new four-cylinder has 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Audi claims that when equipped with the S tronic gearbox, it can sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, with a slightly slower sprint time of 5.7 seconds for the manual. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard on all A5s, including manual version, which receive a version of Quattro with "ultra technology." According to Audi, that entails " an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch along with a decoupling rear axle differential to achieve fully variable torque distribution."
Audi is also offering a new sport suspension for the 2018 A5 that can lower the ride height by nearly 1.0 in. It incorporates different tubular anti-roll bars dampers, and linear-rate springs. Also available is a comfort adaptive damping suspension, which will lower the ride height by 0.4 in.
Meanwhile, the S5 Coupe's all-new V-6 puts out 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and will run from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
Design-wise, both models get sharper lines, a wider horizontal look, a flatter grille, and a lower hood line with a "power dome" to announce the new engines. There's a strong wave-like shoulder line, bigger wheel arches, and new 3-D LED taillights. No lasers here, though. Sorry.
Inside are 8-way power seats, a panoramic sunroof, and an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system with 19 speakers and 755 watts of power. Aluminum "Trimaran" inlays are offered in Dark Brown Walnut Wood or Natural Gray Oak inlays on A5 models and the S5 gets a cooler Aluminum matte brushed or Carbon Atlas inlays.
Optional on both the A5 and S5 is Audi's virtual cockpit, which includes a full-color head-up display that projects driving info directly in the driver's field of vision. Driver's assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic jam assist systems are standard, however.
The Audi connect mobile app has also been rebooted and now includes: Curfew, Speed, and Valet Alerts to keep a closer eye on your pride and joy.
The 2017 Audi A5 and S5 will be making their debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. Pricing and EPA fuel economy estimates are not available at this time but should be announced closer to the vehicles launch date.
