Fiat Chrysler UConnect Gains Apple CarPlay, Android Auto Capability
Infotainment system also revamped with a new interface.
Not content to let Ford get ahead, Fiat Chrysler also announced that its infotainment system will support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto starting later this year. The fourth-generation Uconnect touchscreen system also gets a redesigned interface and upgraded performance.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring capabilities will be offered in certain versions of the new Uconnect system, though FCA isn't yet providing any details about the launch of these technologies. Availability will start with a few "select vehicles" later this year, and this week's CES show in Las Vegas will offer the first demonstrations of the new infotainment system.
Apart from the new smartphone integration tech, FCA claims improved performance from the new Uconnect system, including faster startup time, better processing, and more responsive and higher-resolution touchscreens. The visual interface will also change, as seen in provided screenshots of the system. We were already big fans of the existing Uconnect touchscreen's operation, so we'll be eager to see the new version's upgrades.
Unlike Ford, which expanded existing software to enable Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it's unlikely that FCA will offer a retrofit process for existing vehicles, as only the Uconnect system supports these features.
Stay tuned for more news to come on how FCA plans to roll out its new infotainment technology.
