eBay Motors Selects 29 Must-Buy Future Classics
Get ahold of them before it’s too late.
For most classic car enthusiasts, the prices of well-known models have risen to the point where they are unobtainable to all but those with the deepest pockets. The smartest thing to do is to buy into a future classic, or a car which is slated to become a surefire collectible in the future. Our friends at Hagerty previously developed a list of future classics which could potentially appreciate. Now, eBay Motors compiled a much more comprehensive list of future classic cars aimed at letting the average enthusiast get the jump on the out-of-control classic car market.
The eBay Motors team turned to a group of three enthusiasts to compile a list of up-and-coming modern cars that are either currently riding a wave of value appreciation or are on the short list for future classic status. Using a set of categorical criteria, a group of 29 future classic cars was formed. Some cars chosen are to-be-expectedlike the Acura NSX and the BMW E30 M3, and some cars are more surprising, like the obscure Subaru SVX and the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X.
Scroll down to see some of the standout cars we found from the list, in no particular order, and check out the end of this article for the full list of cars.
1991-2001 Acura NSX
When the Acura NSX arrived on our shores in 1991, big-name supercar manufacturers took notice. The NSX matched or exceeded the performance of its contemporaries, including the Ferrari 348, but was less expensive, more reliable, easier to use, easier to fix, and more comfortable to drive. Combine its status as a world-beater with the rapidly increasing market for classic Japanese sports cars, and you have a perfect storm set to launch the NSX into classic car stardom.
If the Acura NSX captured the supercar market with finesse, usability, and precision, the Jaguar F-Type R broke into the sports car fray with as much subtlety as a freight train engulfed in flames. Aided by its spectacular 552-hp 5.0-liter supercharged V-8, the R Coupe is one of the loudest and most in-your-face production cars available. The car was a maniac on the track, with an overactive rear end and a psychopathic personality. For the 2016 model year, the R-Coupe loses the psychotic attitude and straightens out with standard all-wheel drive, making the insane and gorgeous 2014-2015 R Coupe a great candidate for future classic car status.
1992 - 1997 Subaru SVX
On the other end of the spectrum, the Subaru SVX was a strange diversion for the Japanese manufacturer. The SVX was a Giugiaro-designed coupe with strange proportions, body lines, and windows. The SVX had standard all-wheel drive, a 3.3-liter flat-6 engine, and a funky, futuristic interior with a host of cuttingedge technology at the time. While the SVX was a well-optioned and well-built car in its time, it was prohibitively expensive when compared with the rest of the Subaru lineup, which was seen as a more affordable brand. The car never sold well, and as a result, ended up costing Subaru millions of dollars. This obscure vehicle, coupled with a moderate cult following, makes it an offbeat choice for future classic status.
1990-1995 Volkswagen Corrado VR6
The VW Corrado VR6 is no stranger to talks of future classic status. Based on the Mk. II Golf platform, the Corrado was an attractive front-wheel drive sports coupe from VW. When optioned with the more powerful VR6 engine, the Corrado was hailed as one of the best driving Volkswagens of all time. Its relatively low production numbers and eye-catching styling provide a perfect platform for a future classic.
