The Classic Trucks of the 2019 Woodward Dream Cruise
It's not all muscle cars—pickups and vans star on Woodward Avenue, too.
Cars are the stars of the 2019 Woodward Dream Cruise, which uses the famed boulevard north of Detroit to celebrate classic cars, muscle cars, powerful cars, quirky cars, modified cars, and generally much-beloved cars. But trucks and vans help make the world go 'round. Over the course of a week of watching vehicles cruise up and down Woodward Avenue, though, we were equally drawn to the wonderful classic trucks in attendance. Naturally, we love the cars that pose as pickup trucks, and we spotted a lovely red '57 Ford Ranchero, a gorgeous seafoam green and white '59 Ranchero, a baby-blue '60 Chevy El Camino, and Torino-based Rancheros from the late '60s and early '70s.
Some of the "real trucks" have gorgeous lines and paint schemes, like a Chevy 3100 in navy and dusty yellow. Conversely, some of the best patina is found on what's left of a pickup. There were military trucks and giant mil-spec civilian trucks, like a Unimog in Ford Airport livery from 479 miles away in Kingston, Michigan (on the Wisconsin border). With Ford poised to launch a new Bronco, old Broncos were everywhere, but they weren't the only cool SUVs. We spied a rare first-gen K5 GMC Jimmy with its hardtop off, an equally quirky C104 Jeep Commando, and a high-performance GMC Typhoon. One modified custom truck with a Mad Max feel had a stuffed boar's head mounted on the back; a square-jowled chopped semi-tractor gave off a similar vibe. It looks like the semi-tractor was lowered and shortened, with stoplight eyebrows over the taillights.
Then there were the vans. Many were VWs, and a favorite was one with a Peter Max-inspired paint motif. Sitting coquettishly on the side of Woodward was a red and white Ford Econoline, and it had plenty of cab-over company out on the Avenue, including an Econoline pickup in Hot Wheels livery and a gorgeous Dodge A100 van in blue and white.
