BMW has reportedly revealed a new quad-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 diesel engine at the Vienna engine symposium, according to 7Post. The first vehicle to be powered by the new engine will be the flagship 7 Series, where the diesel will produce a staggering 394 hp from 4,000 to 4,400 rpm and 561 lb-ft of torque from 2,000 to 3,000 rpm. We first heard that this engine was on the way last summer.
According to 7Post, the goal for the quad-turbo I-6 was to improve power and responsiveness, making the engine a convincing V-8 fighter. The engine is based on BMW’s new modular engine layout, which underpins all new gas and diesel engines used across the Bavarian brand’s lineup and BMW Group members such as Rolls-Royce and Mini. Four exhaust turbochargers are used, two high-pressure and two low-pressure. The larger low-pressure turbocharger in BMW’s existing tri-turbo engine was replaced with two smaller units for improved response; BMW says this was done without a significant weight penalty or increased cost.
With this new engine, the BMW 750d xDrive will reportedly be able to accelerate to 60 mph it around 4.5 seconds, while top speed will be limited to 155 mph. The new quad-turbo diesel I-6 will also replace the current tri-turbo 3.0-liter I-6 used in the M550d xDrive, which makes 376 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption has been reduced by five percent in the quad-turbo engine versus the tri-turbo unit. The only gearbox that will be offered will be an eight-speed automatic sourced from ZF.
