More, More, More: The 2022 Subaru BRZ Debuts With 2.4-Liter Engine, 228 HP

A rear-wheel drive miracle in the making.

Oh boy—this is a big one. Well, maybe not as significant sales-wise as Subaru's Forester or Crosstrek, but for many enthusiasts, the 2022 Subaru BRZ is one of 2020's most important new-car debuts. Ever since the very first spec sheet rolled out on the original BRZ back in 2012, the rallying cry was more, more, more; power, tire, stiffness, cylinders, or colors, it didn't matter. The OG BRZ scratched a lot of itches, but subsequently created more questions than it had answers to, especially as the age of the Toyobaru twins inched toward the decade mark.

2022 Subaru BRZ: Bigger Engine, More Power

For the most part, it seems like Subaru/Toyota listened to the fans. With the reveal of the new 2022 Subaru BRZ, there's essentially more of everything, especially under the front hood. Prior to the debut, rumors swirled regarding the future BRZ's heart. Both in contradiction to and conforming with those breathless reports of the new BRZ utilizing a tune of the FA24 turbocharged flat-four engine, the new two-door utilizes a naturally aspirated, 2.4-liter flat-four capable of 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Those figures represent a 23-hp boost in power and a 28-lb-ft spike in torque; good stuff, but it gets even better—the torque comes into effect significantly lower in the rev-range than in the outgoing BRZ, with the new engine spinning out peak torque at 3,700 rpm versus the old car's lofty 6,400 rpm.

Just like that, we're hot to trot. Power is still sent to the rear wheels though either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic and a standard limited-slip differential, so expect plenty of slips and slides on your way through the canyon. No word on straight-line performance just yet, but with a curb weight between 2,815 pounds and 2,881, things look good.

2022 Subaru BRZ: New Threads

The exterior gets a full overhaul as well, with a distinctive and very handsome down-turned, wide-mouthed front fascia and a tightened and tucked rear end. According to Subaru, the new 2022 BRZ is just more than an inch longer and half-an-inch shorter, giving it a more rakish, sleeker appearance. It looks great and markedly upmarket, with a face that we'd be happy to see on something triple the price (or more). The muscular rear end is similarly butched up, with the same dual-outlet exhaust and slick ducktail spoiler curve on the rear decklid. New multi-spoke wheels fill all the wells, complemented by a rather aggressive set of side rocker panels that lead to scalloped side ducts.

Dimensionally, the new BRZ rides on a highly modified version of the old platform, with a wheelbase elongated by a scant 0.2 inch. Subaru pulled chassis know-how gleaned from the rather excellent Subaru Global Platform for the BRZ, applying structural improvements that increased the very specific "front lateral bending rigidity" rating by a whopping 60 percent versus the old car, along with a redesigned MacPherson strut design with double wishbones in the rear for the same razor-sharp character we loved about the old BRZ.

Other than the updated engine and reworked chassis, this is very much a simple compact sports car and a spiritual evolution of the old BRZ, which exactly what we—and many BRZ/Toyota 86 enthusiasts—hoped for. In that regard, the car is un-techy by design, with only a five-mode stability-control system and a host of Subaru's EyeSight driver-safety systems on cars equipped with the automatic transmission.

2022 Subaru BRZ: It's Whats On The Inside That Counts

The inside is equally gussied up. One of the more noticeable upgrades is the 7-inch digital dash that toggles between its standard digital-tach roundel and a linear rev counter when set in Track mode, along with readouts for items like water temperature and g force. In the center of the cockpit, an 8-inch infotainment screen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto gives you access to every vital function, while digital-faced knobs below control the A/C.

There you have it, Toyobaru fans—more of everything. If you're ready to claim one of the new 2022 Subaru BRZs for yourself, set aside time to camp outside dealers until fall 2021. To pass the time, we'll keep you updated on pricing, because as of now, mum's the word from Subaru. However, we can't imagine the 2022 BRZ's MSRP will be a significant leap over the outgoing BRZ's $29,745 base price.
