2017 Toyota 4Runner Gains TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium Trims
The most capable 4Runners short of the TRD Pro
Building on the past success of the off-road SUV, Toyota released information on two new trim levels making their way to the 2017 4Runner. Slotted in between the SR5 Premium and the Limited trims, the new 4Runner TRD Off-Road and Off-Road Premium bring rugged looks and capability to the body-on-frame SUV.
To kick things off, the TRD packs the 4Runner's Multi-Terrain Select system and Crawl Control program offered as an option on the regular SR5 model. These systems work in tandem to keep things shiny side up when the going gets rough and rocky. The Multi-Terrain Select system will tailor the SUV's onboard chassis control systems to a specific environment, like a sandy desert or a muddy field. The Crawl Control system allows the 4Runner to maintain a constant rate of speed, so the driver only has to worry about steering. In addition, the TRD Off-Road is available with the optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, offering increased wheel travel at low speeds.
Of course, this being a TRD model, the trims pack a healthy dose of visual upgrades to both the interior and exterior. Outside, TRD badges are slapped onto the C-pillar and the floor mats for both trims, and the TRD Off-Road Premium trim receives red embroidered "TRD" stitching in the headrests. Both the TRD Off-Road and Off-Road Premium sit on deep-dish wheels.
The hierarchy changes slightly, with the addition of these new trims. The 2017 Toyota 4Runner will be offered in SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. Don't worry, the badass TRD Pro doesn't change aside from a new optional paint color.
