2017 Subaru Impreza Teased Before New York Debut

Sedan and hatchback to be revealed.

When the 2017 Subaru Impreza is unveiled at the New York auto show, it will debut not only a new modular platform but also a new design language. We got our first preview of the so-called "Dynamic and Solid" look with the Subaru Impreza hatchback and sedan concepts in Tokyo and Los Angeles, but the star-studded nameplate is now teasing the front-end of the production-spec Impreza.

As expected, the 2017 Subaru Impreza won't deviate much from the earlier sedan and hatchback concepts. The front-end teaser shows the same polygonal shield grille, center spear, and rounded nose. The concept's sharp, narrow headlights have been smoothed over some, and the lower foglight housings are also toned down with simpler shapes and fewer lines. Simple halogen headlights are shown in the teaser, but we can also make out C-shaped LED foglights.

Earlier spy shots have shown that the 2017 Subaru Impreza will get a slightly sportier shape, with a more sharply raked tailgate for the hatchback model and a stylish character line running along the doors to match its kinked C-pillars. The new Impreza likely won't grow much in length if at all, but the extra 5.5 inches of width on the concept models spells out a slightly wider footprint than the current model. Expect an all-new interior as well, which will be a bit more spacious and focus around Subaru's updated Starlink infotainment system.

The new 2017 Subaru Impreza will of course retain its trademark all-wheel drive, which has been a major driving force behind the company's skyrocketing growth in the U.S. It will ride on a new modular platform meant to accommodate hybrid technology (likely by 2018), but the main powertrain will be a 2.0-liter direct-injection flat-four with a continuously variable transmission.

Check back soon when the 2017 Subaru Impreza sedan and hatchback are fully revealed at the New York auto show.
