Today's Mercedes-Benz isn't a company that lives by restraint, as for every normal automobile in its lineup it also offers a brilliantly frenzied AMG-tuned iteration. The latest in this seemingly never-ending stream of absurd pedestrian cars is the new 2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 Coupe. With this new AMG-enhanced version, Mercedes offers GLC customers a more potent engine and sporty character from its four-door small SUV coupe.

Mercedes built the GLC Coupe to go head-to-head against the BMW X4. In Mercedes' SUV classification, the GLC is somewhat bigger than the compact GLA, slightly smaller than the GLE, and much smaller than the range-topping GLS. Stop us if you're confused.

The E-Class-derived 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine develops 362 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque in the GLC43 Coupe, down five horsepower from the non-coupe GLC43 but up one lb-ft. AMG shortened shift times on the 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission, which is coupled to a rear-biased 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. This setup gets the GLC43 Coupe off the line and to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds.

When we drove the new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe in the Swiss Alps, we felt that while the car was executed flawlessly, it was based around an inconsistent vehicle concept that doesn't really have a true purpose. However, it does have appeal to a certain demographic that is hungry for more premium crossovers.

This AMG-tuned GLC43 then, has the potential to help us to figure out the GLC Coupe's purpose. Maybe adding more horsepower and a dynamic sporty character are just what the GLC Coupe needs to distinguish itself among the plethora of other luxury crossovers on the road? Mercedes hasn't disclosed how much the GLC43 will cost, but the Coupe will go on sale in the first quarter of 2017, so expect pricing details to be released closer to its on-sale date.
