2016 Volvo XC90 R-Design Trim Revealed
The new 2016 Volvo XC90 revealed a few weeks ago is an attractive, well-proportioned SUV, but this new R-Design model turns up the sport factor and gives this Swedish three-row crossover an even sharper look without sacrificing the brand's clean new design language that's meant to lead Volvo into the future.
The R-Design model will be one of three trim levels in the XC90 lineup, joining the mainstream Momentum trim and the more upscale Inscription trim. R-Design is meant to focus on a sportier image, and adds a number of trim details outside like a lower front spoiler, a new grille, and silk metal trim, along with matte silver mirror covers and roof rails and a dual tailpipe surround. Either 20-inch or optional 22-inch R-Design wheels are also included; overall, the R-Design does achieve a sportier look compared to the standard 2016 Volvo XC90 unveiled a few weeks ago.
Inside, the 2016 Volvo XC90 R-Design features sport seats trimmed in Nubuck and Nappa leather, a perforated leather steering wheel, and other trim pieces for the gearshift knob, pedals, key fob, and floor mats that are exclusive to the R-Design model. Volvo also modified the XC90 R-Design's driver display in the instrument cluster to have a sportier design theme in this model.
Each of the 2016 Volvo XC90's three trim levels is available with a choice of two Drive-E engines. The standard T6 AWD model has a 316-hp turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and the T8 plug-in hybrid model combines this same engine with a rear-mounted electric motor for 400 hp and a 25-mile electric driving range.
Volvo has not yet announced prices for the 2016 Volvo XC90 R-Design, but expect it to cost slightly more than the standard T6 AWD which has a base price of $49,825 with destination. The T6 AWD model goes on sale early next year, with the T8 hybrid to follow later next year.
