2016 Volvo XC90 First Edition Sells Out within Two Days

Volvo is banking on the success of the redesigned 2016 Volvo XC90 crossover to boost the company's sales, and early indicators for demand are good. The 1927 XC90 First Edition models offered for sale online sold out after 47 hours on the market, showing a high level of early interest in this Swedish seven-seater.

Volvo designated 1927 special models of the XC90 to commemorate the year the company was founded, and put these exclusive SUVs up for sale online starting last Wednesday when the XC90 was first revealed. Within 47 hours, all were spoken for, with most of the reservations taking place within the first hour of sales according to Volvo.

Each First Edition 2016 Volvo XC90 is individually numbered and feature special badging to set them apart from other 2016 XC90 models. All feature an Onyx Black exterior color, with special 21-inch wheels and a Nappa leather-trimmed interior finished in amber and charcoal with walnut wood trim. Depending on the market, the First Edition cars are either equipped with Volvo's Drive-E turbocharged and supercharged gasoline four-cylinder making 316 hp, or the Drive-E D5 turbodiesel engine with 225 hp that's not available in the U.S.-market XC90.

Clearly, Volvo fans were more than happy to pay the price premium for the exclusive XC90 First Edition, as this model costs $66,825 in the U.S. compared with the base model's starting price of $49,825. The first 2016 Volvo XC90 models should be delivered to the U.S. starting in March or April 2015, with regular sales of the car starting early next year.

The 2016 Volvo XC90 will also offer a T8 plug-in hybrid model, which combines the aforementioned turbocharged and supercharged engine with an electric motor that makes for 400 hp and 25 miles of electric-only driving range.
