Speed and Bravery at the 2016 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion
162 snapshots of living racing history
It starts with a startling, deafening thunder. A pack of more than forty GT cars from the 1960s gets the green flag and rockets up the front straight to turn one. This is the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. This is where racecars from every era are once again put to the test, before a hungry crowd of automotive die-hards. It all happens at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, where competitors jostle for another chance at taking the checkered flag.
Teams are up at dawn, hammering out the last minute preparations to their cars. Drivers bolted into their machines blitz down the narrow rows leading to pit lane. The sound waves from open header exhaust reverberating off trailers and through tents. Walking the paddock is taking a step out of time. Racecars from every decade packed in garages and under tents, each patiently waiting its turn at going wheel to wheel around this legendary racetrack.
While Pebble Beach is a celebration of design (and decadence) this is a celebration of speed and bravery. There's no telling a racing driver to "take it easy"and no dollar figure that will sway one from pushing these priceless racecars to the very limit. There's one wordlessly agreed-upon pace here. Flat out.
