Mini has been churning out ever-larger and more practical cars since the brand was reborn in the early 2000s. The latest in this line of more mainstream offerings in an all-wheel-drive version of the new 2016 Mini Clubman wagon — the Clubman All4.
Mini first introduced the All4 nomenclature and system with the first Mini Countryman, which we had for a Four Seasons test back in 2011. The all-wheel-drive 2016 Mini Clubman All4 will be offered with both of the engines currently available on the standard front-wheel-drive Clubman. That means a base 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder for the Clubman S with 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Both the base Clubman All4 and Clubman S All4 will come with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission.
Like Mini’s other cars, the 2016 Mini Clubman All4 will operate normally as a front-wheel-drive car. When the electronically operated system senses wheel slip or calls for added torque to the rear during high-speed cornering, the rear axle is engaged to send up to 30 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels. That means even with all-wheel drive, the Clubman All4 is very much a front-wheel-drive-biased car.
The base 2016 Mini Cooper Clubman will be the first marriage of BMW and Mini’s new eight-speed automatic transmission with the 1.5-liter three-cylinder. The combination is used for a variant of the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer in European markets.
Compared to the base front-wheel-drive 2016 Mini Clubman, the All4 adds 265 pounds for a total of 3,370 pounds. It sprints from 0-60 mph in a sluggish 9.2 seconds with a manual (9.3 seconds with the automatic), while the more powerful Clubman S does the deed in a more respectable 6.7 seconds with a manual (6.6 with the automatic). Despite the added heft to the Clubman S All4, it shaves as much as 0.3 second from its 0-60-mph run compared to the standard Clubman S.
When the high-performance 2016 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works eventually arrives, it will likely come standard with All4 all-wheel drive and the 228-hp version of Mini and BMW’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, an engine already offered in other new Mini JCW models. That combination can also be found currently in the 2016 BMW X1. We’re also due fairly soon for an all-new Mini Countryman, which promises to be a lifted version of this Clubman All4 with the same gamut of engine and transmission options.
Expect the 2016 Mini Clubman All4 to command a price premium of about $1,500 over the standard model, for a total starting price around $26,500. For the Clubman S All4, that number should climb to about $30,000. The 2016 Mini Clubman All4 will arrive in showrooms this April.
