2016 Ford F-150 to Offer CNG/Propane Prep Package for 5.0L V-8
Only half-ton pickup available with factory CNG kit.
2016 Ford F-150 pickup models with the 5.0-liter V-8 engine will be offered with a gaseous-fuel prep package from the factory, becoming the only light-duty pickup with CNG and propane capability. This means the F-150 will be the only half-ton pickup available with a factory conversion kit; both General Motors and Ram offer natural-gas conversion kits from the factory, but only on their heavy-duty pickup offerings.
The previous-gen Ford F-150 offered a gaseous-fuel prep package for its 3.7-liter V-6 engine, but Ford expects higher demand for this V-8 CNG pickup given feedback it got from customers. Interested customers start by opting for the $315 gaseous-fuel prep package from the factory that includes upgraded intake and exhaust valves, and then can choose from a list of four Ford-approved upfitters who supply fuel tanks, fuel lines, and fuel injectors compatible with compressed natural gas or propane.
Ford F-150 pickups running on natural gas or propane don't lose much performance, as pickups so equipped retain the same towing capacity as a standard V-8 F-150. Payload capacity is slightly less due to the weight of the CNG or propane tanks, which vary in capacity depending on the supplier. Cost for the full upfitting is said to run between $7,500 and $9,500 depending on supplier and fuel tank capacity, though the low price of compressed natural gas may make up for some of this upfront cost.
Ford also offers CNG and propane prep packages for the 2015 Ford Transit van and the 2015 Ford Transit Connect, and for its F-Series heavy duty pickups. 2016 Ford F-150 V-8 pickups will be available to order with the CNG/propane prep package starting this summer.
