2015 GMC Canyon 4WD SLE Crew Cab: Around the Block

’Murica’s return to (not so) small trucks.

If you've wanted a midsize truck in the past few years, you had two choices: Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier. Or you could troll Craigslist for a Ford Ranger or Mazda B-Series. Midsize trucks all but disappeared because they offered less than full-size trucks did at a similar price. As full-size trucks have gotten even bigger and tougher in the last decade, automakers have warmed back up to small(er) trucks, albeit not as small as a Mitsubishi Mighty Max. General Motors is the first domestic car company to rejoin the midsize game, long monopolized by the Japanese, with rebirth of its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.

There will undoubtedly be more off-road-oriented trims to come, but this SLE's purpose is to be a suburban toy hauler.

The Chevrolet Colorado recently won Motor Trend's sought-after Truck of the Year award. The Colorado and Canyon are mechanical duplicates, but we think the GMC is a bit more posh with a distinctive front fascia, headlights, and taillights. We prefer the GMC's interior as well, so throwing down the extra $885 for the Canyon instead of the Colorado doesn't bother us much.

With four-wheel drive, two-speed transfer case, and automatic locking rear differential, the Canyon could be a capable trail runner, although its long wheelbase, low-hanging side steps, and droopy front air dam could all easily get snagged on roughage. There will undoubtedly be more off-road-oriented trims to come, but this SLE's purpose is to be a suburban toy hauler.

If optioned with the 2.5-liter inline-four, the Canyon is only capable of towing a mere 3,500 pounds. But this SLE's 305-hp, 3.6-liter V6 can tow as much as 7,000 pounds. No, you won't see this rig hauling fully loaded 30-foot racing trailers, but it is more than ready to haul a long list of motorized playthings.
With bed lengths measuring 61.7 to 74.0 inches, there's certainly enough room for home renovation supplies or a couple of dirt bikes or whatever the weekend has in store.

Welcome back to the midsize truck game, America.
