2014 Mini Cooper – Friendly Dealers, Real-World MPG

Miles to Date: 11,474

Long-Term 2014 MINI Cooper Update: Fall 2014 ( 1 of 5 ) Miles to date: 11,474

Having met so many friendly and enthusiastic Mini fanatics on the 2014 Mini Takes the States road rally, we weren’t too surprised to find a similar warm welcome at our local Mini dealer when we took our 2014 MINI Cooper for its first service. With nearly 11,000 miles on the clock, the little red hatchback went to Ann Arbor Mini for an oil change and inspection. We also had the dealership install winter tires provided by the Tire Rack.

Mini covers regular maintenance up to three years or 36,000 miles, so our oil and filter change along with the full-vehicle inspection was free. The friendly service technicians also performed a recall fix that applies to all 2014 MINI Cooper models: Some cars may have come with a non-self-locking nut for the spare tire, so our dealer installed a new part that is sure to secure the spare tire underneath the car.
Installing the winter tires was a simple proposition as well; the $180 charge included storage of our summer tires until we need them again in the spring. As for the tires themselves, they’re Bridgestone Blizzak LM60 Run-Flats in the 205/45R17 size, and a set of four cost us $772.64.

MPG Adjustment

Along with the minor recall fix, Mini has issued a different sort of notice for 2014 and 2015 Mini owners, concerning fuel economy. Our Mini, with its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, is subject to an EPA fuel-economy adjustment that came about after an error was found in Mini’s calculations. As such, our car’s previous 30/42 mpg city/highway rating is revised down to 29/40 mpg. The combined rating also drops from 34 mpg to 33 mpg.
Our experience confirms that this revision is spot-on. We’ve averaged 32.9 mpg so far, right on the new combined number, and our highway trips corroborate the new highway rating of 40 mpg as well. Our highest tank average of 41.6 mpg did crest the magic 40-mpg mark, but most of our highway trips have resulted in 38-40 mpg, more in line with the new ratings.
We’ll see if the impending winter weather starts to affect our 2014 Mini Cooper’s mileage over the next few months, as our Mini is now prepped for the cold with its winter tires and a set of all-weather floormats from Weather Tech.
