Standing Mile: Jaguar XKR-S GT vs Audi R8 V10 Plus

Germany and England both bring 550 hp to the table with the 2014 Audi R8 V10 Plus and the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT. We know that each vehicle represents the highest-performing example of its respective model range, but the question remains—which earns bragging rights in our Standing Mile test?

The 2014 Audi R8 V10 Plus is the fastest R8 you can buy, and it’s no surprise why. Powering all four wheels is a mid-mounted 550-hp 5.2-liter V-10 engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Top speed comes in at a whopping 197 mph, with a max torque figure of 398 lb-ft. Other significant improvements over the regular ten-cylinder R8 include carbon fiber bodywork and carbon-ceramic brake rotors.

A 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine in the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT makes the same 550 hp as the Audi, but delivers its heady 502 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The Jaguar XKR-S GT comes equipped with a laundry list of aerodynamic and weight-reduction upgrades over the standard XKR-S, including a carbon fiber front splitter, rear diffuser, and prominent rear wing. Still, it is slightly heavier than the Audi, at 3865 pounds against the R8’s 3678 pounds. Top speed for the limited-edition Jag is 186 mph.

Ultimately, the 2014 Audi R8 V10 Plus gets the edge from first launch. The all-wheel-drive R8 takes off like a bandit, leaving the track-prepped Jaguar XKR-S GT firmly in its wake. No doubt both are an absolute joy to hoon around a track, but in a straight line the Audi’s V-10 and monster grip are too much for the Jaguar to handle.
