2008 Audi RS4 Cabriolet
When Audi's RS4 sedan finally made its way to our shores last fall, we were told that no other body styles would be offered, despite the fact that an avant and a cabriolet are available in Europe. A recent talk with one of Audi's product planners revealed that the previous plan may be changing. We'd love to tell you that the sport-ute-slaying wagon is on its way here, but that isn't the case (feel free to join our support group--we're learning to accept this sad truth, too.) Instead, we've been told that the RS4 cabriolet still has a very good chance of making it stateside.
The decision makes sense to us. The U.S. is one of the largest convertible markets in the world, but high-powered wagons don't sell here. The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon, for example, is a special-order only model here, and BMW's M5 wagon won't come here at all. Most buyers for these high-priced performers are in sunny places like L.A. and Miami, where the RS4 cabrio would be right at home, bellowing top-down tenor notes into the evening sky. If it does indeed get the green light, the cabriolet will be powered by the same high-revving, 420-hp V-8 found in the sedan, and should wear a price tag of just over $70,000.
