2014 volvo xc90 Reviews and News

2014 Volvo XC90
2014 Volvo XC90

New for 2014

The 2014 Volvo XC90 adds cosmetic changes such as a new Executive C-Pillar emblem and floor mats, optional Sovereign Hide soft leather upholstery, folding front passenger seat, 19-inch “Galateia” wheels and Crystal White exterior paint. R-Design models add a digital compass, Homelink garage door opener, and a grocery bag holder.

Vehicle Overview

The 2014 Volvo XC90 is a seven-passenger luxury crossover sold in four trims and is available in front- or all-wheel drive configurations. A redesigned XC90 will go on sale in Spring 2015 as a 2016 model.

Summary

On sale since the 2003 model year, the 2014 Volvo XC90 is powered by a 3.2-liter I-6 producing 240 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The crossover’s powertrain is no longer competitive with the class, especially in fuel economy where the EPA rates front-drive variants at 16/25 mpg city/highway while opting for all-wheel drive drops those numbers down to 16/23 mpg. The old I-6 it is underpowered and “struggles to move this nearly 4500-pound vehicle with any urgency” while the large 40-foot turning circle limits the crossover’s maneuverability around town. Its available all-wheel drive system makes it a capable all-weather vehicle for buyers looking for a seven-seat crossover that emphasizes comfort and safety.
Interior quality remains a 2014 XC90 strong suite with “seats that look upscale and are supremely comfortable.” Cabin refinement is another high point with the crossover because of its quiet quarters and smooth ride especially in the highway.
Being a Volvo, the 2014 XC90 is equipped with a host of active and passive safety features such as a standard roll stability control while a blind spot warning system is optional. The 2014 XC90 has a four-star rollover safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and is considered a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, earning a good score on all five categories.

What We Think

Even though it’s been on sale for over a decade, the 2014 Volvo XC90 is still a viable choice with its high safety ratings, comfortable and refined cabin, and available all-wheel drive system. In an Editor’s Review of a 2009 XC90 AWD, we noted that its safety features “are still there in spades,” making it one of the safest crossovers on the market. The plush and upscale cabin with seats “swathed in rich, creamy leather and accented with contrast piping” highlights the crossover’s comfortable interior. However, the dated powertrain, especially the I-6 engine, detracts from the car’s overall refinement and shows the 2014 XC90’s age, struggling to move it while returning disappointing fuel economy.
