New for 2015

The Volvo XC60 receives a number of changes for the 2015 model year, including new Drive-E engines with an eight-speed automatic, refreshed front fascia, improved seats, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, and new safety technology.

Vehicle Overview

The Volvo XC60 is a compact premium crossover SUV that combines the Swedish automaker’s legendary reputation for safety with sporty driving dynamics, the utility of a crossover, and, with the introduction of the Drive-E engine series, reasonable fuel efficiency. In price, the XC60 fits below the three-row XC90 and alongside the two-row XC70 crossover-wagon.

The 2015 Volvo XC60 shares powerplants with the related S60, and unlike the V60, the XC60 is available with both new Drive-E engines. The Drive-E engines are available with an eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive only thus far, as the engineers are still trying to get the all-wheel-drive system to work with the new engine/transmission. Look for the Drive-E engines to expand to AWD models in the next few years. For now, the AWD models retain their engines and six-speed transmissions from years past. In a 2015.5 model year update the T6 Drive-E engine (with its trick twin-charger setup with a supercharger feeding into a turbocharger) is introduced and the non-turbo 3.0-liter I-6 is discontinued.

Model: T5 Drive-E
Engine and Transmission: Turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 — eight-speed auto

EPA-rated fuel efficiency: 24/31 mpg

Power: 240 hp/266 lb-ft
EPA-rated fuel efficiency: 17/24 mpg

Model: 3.2 AWD (Discontinued in 2015.5 update)
Engine and Transmission: Turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 — six-speed auto
Power: 240 hp/236 lb-ft
EPA-rated fuel efficiency: 18/25 mpg

Model: T6 AWD R-Design
Engine and Transmission: Turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 — six-speed auto
Power: 325 hp/354 lb-ft
EPA-rated fuel efficiency: 17/24 mpg
Notable features on the 2015 XC60 include LED daytime running lights, the city safety system (the XC60 can automatically brake under 19 mph when a collision is imminent), adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with distance alert, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, active high beams, cross traffic alert, HID headlights, Harman Kardon premium audio system, Bluetooth hands free with streaming audio, and the Sensus infotainment system.
The 2015 Volvo XC60 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and is considered a 2015 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.

What We Think

The 2015 Volvo XC60 is a capable, handsome, and now rather efficient smaller crossover. Luxury touches put the XC60 on par with the competition from Germany. In a Driven Review of a 2009 XC60 (the interior has remained largely the same), we noted: “As with all Volvos, the seats themselves are pretty much the best in the business, being not only supportive but supremely comfortable. The surfaces inside the cabin are nicely finished, with a visually interesting mix of contrasting materials, including leather, soft-touch plastics, brushed metal, and wood. Headroom is plentiful in all seating positions, and rear seat legroom is acceptable, especially if you're less than six feet tall.”
In an Editor’s Notebook review of a 2010 XC60 T6 AWD, we commented, “While it's true that the center stack is no longer cutting edge, the controls work well and are quite intuitive.” That is, except for the navigation. Even in later iterations the methods are buttons on the back of the steering wheel (can’t be used by a passenger, obviously), a remote control (don’t lose it!), or via voice control. We longed for an in-dash controller. Additionally, the infotainment system needs an update, as the graphics and menus have not aged well.
With the introduction of the Drive-E wonder-engines, they have fast become the ones to get, as they come with nearly the same power and far superior fuel efficiency over their carryover I-5 and I-6 alternatives. If AWD is a must, then the older powerplants are the only option, but consider using the money saved for a good set of winter tires, and you can enjoy the fuel saving all year long.
