2014 Volvo S60
2014 Volvo S60

New for 2014

The refreshed 2014 Volvo S60 gains three new exterior colors, customizable instrument cluster, updated exterior styling, new headlights, a grille with a larger logo, LED daytime running lights, integrated exhausts, two new 17-inch wheel designs for the T5 model, and a new Sport Package with new 18-inch wheels. T6 models gain new sport seats, 18-inch wheels, standard keyless start with Personal Car Communicator, paddle shifters, and optional 19-inch wheels with lowered sport chassis. R-Design variants gain HomeLink remote garage door opener and a digital compass in the rear view mirror as standard equipment. The Premium Plus grade adds a grocery bag holder (part of the Platinum trim in T6 models) and rearview camera standard while the Platinum trim adds auto dimming and power retractable exterior mirrors and accent lighting.

Vehicle Overview

The 2014 Volvo S60 is a compact luxury sports sedan sold in six trims, two engine choices, and front- or all-wheel-drive configurations. Two new four-cylinders are added for the 2015 model year but only with front-wheel drive.

Summary

The 2014 Volvo S60 is available with a 2.5-liter turbocharged I-5 producing 250 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque or a 3.0-liter I-6 making 300 hp and 325 lb-ft in the T6 and 325 hp and 354 lb-ft in the R-Design paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is average for the class with the EPA rating front-drive I-5 models at 21/30 mpg city/highway while opting for all-wheel drive drops those numbers down to 20/29 mpg. However, T6 variants with their 18/25 mpg rating are behind especially compared to its competition.
Of all the cars in Volvo’s lineup the S60 (along with the V60 wagon for the 2015 model year) possess the best driving dynamics, rivaling or besting that of competitors such as the Audi A4, Acura TSX and TL, and BMW 3 Series, especially in T6 AWD grade. The dynamic chassis provides the best balance between comfort and handling, giving the S60 “a supple ride yet excellent grip” and makes it viable as a daily driver or for long drives. Its powertrains provide “smooth, progressive, and seamless power” and works well paired to the six speed automatic with the exception of “slow manual-mode upshifts.”
Interior and cabin quality is a 2014 S60 strong suit with an interior “premium looking interior finish and trim.” Ergonomically-designed and supportive seats remain a highlight in Volvos due to the high levels of comfort they provide. While passenger space is improved, the rear seats remain snug compared to competitors and trunk space at 12 cubic feet is on the small side. Volvo's Sensus infotainment system improves upon old Volvo units but remains unintuitive and complicated to use with a single scrolling wheel to control the navigation.
Safety remains a Volvo hallmark with a host of standard passive and active features such as seats with whiplash protection and side impact protection. Volvo puts its City Safety auto-brake and collision avoidance system standard on all 2014 models except the XC90. Buyers can also opt for the Technology Package to add a blind spot warning system, Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, Lane Change Merger Aid, front and rear park assist, Cyclist detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Cross Traffic Alert.
The 2014 Volvo S60 has a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and is considered a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS, earning a good score on all categories (good is the highest possible score).

What We Think

While its fuel economy is average at best, the 2014 Volvo S60 is an excellent compact luxury sports sedan with an attractive exterior, pleasant ride, powerful engines, excellent handling, and upscale interior. During a Four Seasons Test of a 2012 model, we raved about the S60’s combination of driving dynamics, comfort, and livability, making it an excellent daily driver. Additionally, in a 2013 Driven review, we noted that the car’s excellent chassis and “nicely weighted steering” makes it pleasant especially with comfortable leather seats that “feels like sitting in a giant catcher’s mitt.” The car’s snug rear seats, small trunk, and complicated infotainment system detracts from its overall usability as a family car and for hauling cargo.

Volvo S60 Supercar Opera House
When most Americans think of V-8 motorsports, the obvious first series to come to mind is NASCAR. But if you live Down Under, it's all about V8 Supercars, and the series is about to grow by one with the introduction of Volvo's S60 in the series. Australia's native auto manufacturing sector may be winding down for various economic reasons, but the country is as famously full of gearheads as ever, and Volvo is hoping to capture fans' passion with its new entry.
2015 Volvo V60 Front Three Quarter
The 2015 Volvo V60 may mark the return of the wagon to Volvo’s lineup, but it’s also significant for offering a new turbocharged engine that’s part of the brand’s new efficiency-minded Drive-E powertrain family. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Drive-E motor that’s standard on the V60 T5 as well as the 2015 Volvo S60 T5 is living up to its green mission by delivering impressive fuel economy numbers of 25/37/29 mpg city/highway/combined in the 2015 Volvo V60 and S60.
2014 Volvo XC60 Front Three Quarter
Three automakers announced pricing this week for some of their 2014 models: Volvo has upgraded almost its entire lineup, most of which see modest price increases. Mazda and Subaru, on the other hand, have issues mid-year price hikes for the CX-5 crossover, MX-5 Miata roadster, and Impreza WRX sport compact.
