Triumph Company Overview
The British Triumph Motor Company was founded under the name in 1930. The company's origins though, go further back to 1887. That year, the Triumph Cycle Company started to sell motorcycles such as Model H to the military and, later, to the public. In the '20s, the company expanded its portfolio to automobiles, selling its first car, the Triumph 10/20, in 1923. The company changed its name seven years later.
The company went into bankruptcy in 1936 with its name and assets purchased in 1945 by the Standard Motor Co. Standard used the Triumph name for its brand of sports cars.

Standard was purchased by Leyland Motors Ltd. in 1960, which become the British Leyland Motor Corporation eight years later. British developed and sold the very last Triumph, the Acclaim, in 1981, before discontinuing it in 1984. The Rover 200, created by British offshoot Austin Rover Group, replaced it.
The Triumph trademark is currently owned by German automaker BMW.
