Vickers plc took over Rolls-Royce Motors in 1980, which it later sold to Volkswagen. However, BMW, which had also been vying for Rolls-Royce, was able to obtain the Rolls-Royce Motors name and logo through Rolls-Royce plc, which owned both. Later both companies worked out a deal where BMW would assume control of Rolls-Royce Motors' name and likeness.
Rolls-Royce cars are considered stately vehicles, whose retro look belies its powerful engines and state-of-the-art technology. Well-known Rolls include the Phantom, Continental, Corniche, and Silver Spirit. When BMW assumed full control of the name in 2003, it debuted a new Phantom at the North American International Auto Show that same year. In 2006, the automaker announced it plans to manufacture a new Rolls priced below the Phantom.
Recently, Rolls-Royce debuted the Phantom Drophead Coupe, a convertible, at the 2007 North American International Auto Show.
