Renault Company Overview
French automaker Renault S.A. was formed in 1899 by the Renault brothers and friend Thomas Evert. The success of their first car, the Renault Voiturette 1CV, and others such as the AK 90CV, in racing helped establish the company's race car pedigree. The success of their first car, the Renault Voiturette 1CV, and others such as the AK 90CV, in racing helped establish the company's race car pedigree. Other innovations, such as the turbocharger, established its technological know-how.
After World War II, the company was taken control by the French government and renamed Régie Nationale des Usines Renault. It made its first forays into the North American auto market with the Renault Dauphine. Unfortunately, the car's antiquated styling and quality issues turned off many customers. Renault tried a new tactic in the '60s, forming an alliance with American Motor Company (AMC), selling such cars as the Rambler Classic. Renault would take over AMC in 1980. It later sold its shares and the last of AMC's assets to Chrysler.
Renault became a private corporation again in 1996 and was renamed Renault S.A. In 1999, Renault purchased controlling stock of Nissan Motor Co., which was nearly bankrupt, and assigned its then vice-president Carlos Ghosn to head the Japanese company. Ghosn later became president of both companies in 2005.
Currently, Renault continues its expansion plans in Europe with Nissan. Popular Renaults include the Clio and Megane hatchbacks. Besides cars, Renault also produces commercial vehicles like buses and tractors.
