Plymouth Company Overview
The Chrysler Corporation established the Plymouth brand in 1928 to compete in the entry-level car segment dominated by Ford and General Motors' Chevrolet division. Based on a rebadged Maxwell (which Chrysler had purchased in the early Twenties), it did well; though its cars were a bit more pricey, they also had more standard features such as hydraulic brakes.

The 1940s and 1950s were the marquee's golden years, with Plymouths consistently joining Chevys and Fords among best-selling entry-level vehicles. But awkward designs, Chrysler's focus on Dodge and, later, its own Chrysler marque, led to sales drops in the '70s and '80s. By the beginning of the '90s, most Plymouths were rebadged vehicles from automaker Mitsubishi.
Plymouth looked like it would be turning around after Chrysler discontinued its Eagle division in 1998. But the automaker's merger with Daimler-Benz and the creation of DaimlerChrysler nixed the plans. In 1999, Chrysler President Jim Holden announced the division would end on its 2001 model year. The Plymouth Neon was the last Plymouth sold by the brand.
Well-known Plymouths include the muscle-car Duster; the Fury sedan; Voyager minivan; and the Prowler roadster. Other Plymouths like the Colt and Laser were rebadge Mitsubishis (Mirage and Eclipse respectively).
