Peugeot Company Overview
French automaker SA des Automobiles Peugeot was founded in 1897. However, many attribute 1882 as its founding year even though it was selling bicycles instead of cars at that time. Between that time, founder Armand Peugeot created the first cars such as a steam-powered three-wheeler and the Type 15. By 1903, half the cars in France were manufactured by Peugeot.
In 1974, rival Citroen went bankrupt. Peugeot, which already had a 30 percent stake in the company, took it over completely in 1975 to create PSA Peugeot Citroen. The new company purchase Chrysler Corporation's European holdings a few years later.

The first Peugeots entered the U.S. in the late Fifties with such cars as the 405 and the 505. Plummeting sales and competition, especially from the Japanese automaker, led to the automaker's withdrawal from the U.S. market in 1991.
The company continues to flourish in Europe, second only in size to Volkswagen, the region's number one automaker. In 2007, new Peugeot CEO Christian Streiff hinted that the company may return to the U.S. market.
