Oldsmobile Company Overview
American entrepreneur Ransom Eli Olds founded automaker Olds Motor Vehicle Co. in 1897. Though its vehicles sold well, financial difficulties led to its acquisition by General Motors in 1908.
The brand earned a reputation for technological style and innovation in the following decades. In 1940, the brand offered "Hydra-matic Driver", the predecessor to today's automatic transmission. The 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado was equipped with the first front-wheel drive system on an American car. That same year, the Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight LSS offered the world's GPS navigation system to consumers.

The Seventies and Eighties proved to be one of the brand's best decades. The Oldsmobile Cutlass was the best selling car in the U.S. market and garnered the brand the number three spot among best-selling brands after Chevrolet and Ford. But a scandal involving Chevrolet engines in Oldsmobiles, plus GM's attempts to revitalize it Buick and Pontiac brands, led to the collapse of the brand. 2004 marked the end with the production end of the Oldsmobile Alero.
Because of its long history, the name and number of famous and well-known Oldsmobiles are long. Beside the Toronado and, of course, the Cutlass, other Oldsmobiles include the 442, Firenza, Alero, Intrigue, and Silhouette.
There are currently no plans to bring back the marque. GM brand Saturn is considered the "spiritual" successor to Oldsmobile.
