In 1952, the British Motor Corporation (BMC) purchased MG. BMC, Jaguar Cars, and Pressed Steel formed the British Motor Holdings (BMH) in 1968; two years later, BMH merged with the Leyland Motor Corporation and formed British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC).
After BLMC changed its name to the Rover Group, it sold off MG to British Aerospace which, in turn, sold it to BMW. In 2000, BMW sold the automaker to MG Rover Group which filed for bankruptcy protection in 2005. Chinese automaker Nanjing Automobile Group purchase MG's name as well as MG Rover Group's assets.
Throughout most of its history, MG continued to produced two-seater sports cars. Other, larger MGs were just badge-engineered versions of its current owners' vehicles. Well-known MGs include the MG Midget, which there are several versions, and, of course, the MGB. Nanjing has announced that MG has two new sports cars in the works: MG 3 and MG 5. Both are expected to go on sales within the next two years.
