Merkur Company Overview
Merkur was a brand created by Ford in 1986 and which it hoped it could sell its German-built Fords to Americans. Merkur was a brand created by Ford in 1986 and which it hoped it could sell its German-built Fords to Americans. Merkur, which is the German word for Mercury (not to be confused with Ford's Mercury brand, which has no counterpart in Germany or, for that matter, in Europe), sold two vehicles, the Merkur XR4Ti and the Merkur Scorpio.
Both Merkur (correctly pronounced "mare-coor") sedans were sold at select Lincoln-Mercury dealerships. The XR4Ti, which was based on the Ford Sierra XR4i, was a three-door hatchback while the Scorpio was a sedan based on the Ford Scorpio hatchback.
The brand was discontinued in 1989, with Ford citing currency exchange and federal safety requirements leading to the brand's demise. Note that, unlike their American spawn, the European versions sold quite well.
Ford has currently no plans to revive the Merkur name or brand.
