Maserati Company Overview
Exotic automaker Maserati S.p. A. was founded in 1914 by the Maserati brothers. All racecar enthusiasts, their custom-built cars quickly established both the brothers and the company's reputation as serious race car builders.
In 1937, the company was sold to the Orsi family. The company, though, didn't develop its first "road" car until the Maserati A6 (not to be confused with the Audi A6). In the '50s, the company continued to focus on such cars which included the 3500, 5000, the Sebring (not to be confused with the Chrysler Sebring), the Mistral, and the first Quattroporte, the marque's first four-door car.

In 1968, French automaker Citroen purchased the company. Later, French automaker PSA Peugeot took over its rival in 1974. Barely surviving the merger, Maserati bounced back with funding from the government and its purchase by Italian motorcycle company Benelli. Fiat would take over Maserati in 1993 and, after briefly being owned by rival Ferrari, again in 2005.
Besides the Quattroporte, other well-known Maseratis include the Spyder, Gran Sport, MC 12, and GranTurismo. In February, sketches of a Mistral successor leaked across the Internet. Maserati has not yet confirmed—or denied—the drawings.
