Fiat, which stands for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Italian Car Factory of Turin), is an Italy-based automotive group that is the owner of such well-known exotic marques as Lancia and Maserati.
Fiat was founded in 1899 by a group of investors. Some of the automaker's early achievements include the Fiat 1400 diesel, the "Robogate" (an assembly line robotic system), and the Fiat Punto.
The company made its first major appearance in the U.S. where it built its first factory in 1908. U.S. automaker General Motors acquired shares in Fiat in 2000 which opened up the possibility of the American automaker in purchasing Fiat's automobile branch in 2004. GM, instead, decided to pay the $2 billion dollar penalty. The two partners would later separate in 2005.
Fiat either owns or controls (or both) a wide variety of companies in the automotive, engine, financial, and industrial segments in both Italy and around the world. Besides Lancia and Maserati, the company also runs automakers Alfa Romeo and Ferrari as well as its own Fiat brand. For 2006 and 2007, Fiat has released such new vehicles as the new Fiat Panda, Linea, Bravo, and Nuova 500. All are "micro cars" commonly sold outside the North American markets in such countries as Europe and South America.
